Operator translator: X to Google and back
Paste a query written for one search engine and get the closest version for the other, with a note for every operator that changed or had to go.
Try:
How the translation works
Both search engines share the basics. Quotes for an exact phrase, OR in capitals for either word and a minus sign to leave a word out all mean the same thing on X and on Google, so the translator passes them through unchanged. The differences are in the operators with a colon.
| What it does | X | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posts or pages by one account | from:handle |
site:x.com/handle |
Google only knows the pages it has indexed. |
| On or after a date | since:2026-03-01 |
after:2026-03-01 |
Google's date is when it thinks a page was published or updated. |
| Before a date | until:2026-04-01 |
before:2026-04-01 |
On X, until: leaves out the date itself. |
| Posts linking to a site | url:example.com |
site:example.com (pages on it) |
Not quite the same: X finds posts sharing the site, Google finds pages on it. |
| Replies to an account | to:handle |
"@handle" |
Google can't tell a reply from a mention. |
| Language | lang:en |
(no operator) | Use Google's language setting. |
| Likes, reposts, replies | min_faves:10 and family |
(no operator) | Google can't see engagement. |
| Links, media, replies | filter:links and family |
(no operator) | Dropped when translating to Google. |
| Place | near:"Denver" within:25mi |
(no operator) | Add the place as a plain word on Google. |
| Page title, URL, file type | (no operator) | intitle: inurl: filetype: |
Words are kept as plain words on X; filetype is dropped. |
Google documents site:, before:, after:, quotes and the minus sign in its own help pages. On the X side, from:, to:, dates and language appear in X's advanced search form; operators such as min_faves: and filter: are widely used but not described by X, and could change.
When to translate and when to stop
A translated query is a starting point. The two engines index different things: X searches its own posts in full, while Google sees only the X pages it has crawled, and it ranks them by its own rules. If a translated Google query returns very little, remove site:x.com and try the whole web, or go back to X search for anything recent.
For the reasons behind each row, read X vs Google search operators. To run one query on both engines at once, use the launcher.
